Dear Finance and Administration Team:
Time flies, and here we are enjoying this beautiful summer weather working on a brand-new fiscal year. These past 5 months have been great. I have to say that I am very happy working with all of you here at Indiana University. Little by little I have been introducing myself to our units, and every day I learn more about the amazing people working with the Senior Leadership Team. I have to say that I feel very fortunate and honored to work with all of you.
Thank you for coming to the Cookout. It was so much fun! I enjoyed grilling delicious food, but more importantly, I enjoyed meeting you.
I had the pleasure to talk to a few of you, and I have to say that one of my goals in the next months is to join your team meetings and conduct visits to your offices so I can get to know you more. With that said, and in the same spirit, in this edition of The Socket, I want all of you to know me better, so I decided to share a bit more about myself and my background.
I am originally from Winston-Salem, North Carolina where I grew up in a warm and happy family. As a child, some of the things I enjoyed the most were: exploring the woods near (and sometimes not so near) our home; strolling along the creeks (and ditching our socks and shoes to walk through the same) and staying out as late as Mom and Dad would let us on warm summer nights.
One of my passions is writing so I got a bachelor's degree in English and Journalism from North Carolina A&T State University. Then I got a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. Once I finished and served a brief stint with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in D.C. I returned to graduate school to pursue a Ph.D. in Political Science from UNC-Chapel Hill.
I married the love of my life, Sandra, and we have two grown sons, Evan, and Addison. I consider myself a relaxed person and have a passion for numbers and the stories they tell. When I am not crunching numbers, I enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, and of course my favorite thing to do is spending time with family and friends on planned adventures and impromptu outings! I love music, all genres, but my favorite is jazz.
I happily became the Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration of Indiana University on March 1st of this year. I have enjoyed working with the President, learning about the university, and leading our Senior Leadership Team.
Thank you for reading a little bit about me. You are a very important part of our unit, and I value what you do. I truly hope to learn about you soon. In the meantime, I want to thank you for your hard work during the end of the fiscal year and to wish you well in this second half of the year.
Dwayne
Continuous Improvement Corner
In place of the usual project updates, we thought we'd introduce the Continuous Improvement initative to our new readers. The EVPFA Continuous Improvement (CI) initiative was launched in 2016 to support the division's goal to "ensure and provide efficient and safe daily operations" and "sound financial management." This is accomplished by using Lean Six Sigma tools and collaboration of staff from across EVPFA and many other areas of IU.
CI has accomplished some amazing things since 2016! A full rundown of all the successfully completed projects, and projects currently underway, are available on the EVPFA website.

Employee Services, Training, & Communication (ESTC)
In June, the Financial Training & Communications team relaunched their website, training.iu.edu. If you had bookmarks or saved links on the old site, you’ll likely need to update them. We hope you’ll check out the updated site and let us know what you think!
Juliet Roberts has been meeting regularly with Travel staff to develop content for a new Travel support form which will launch this fall. This support form will mirror the functionality of the Purchasing, AP, P-Card, and SDM support form and provide answers to frequently asked travel questions in addition to links to supplemental support materials. It’s been a long, detailed, process but it’s nearing the finish line.
Additionally, Juliet has continued to rework existing Pre-Approval travel documentation to accommodate the upcoming Trip Authorization change. Juliet has done a great job breaking down existing documentation into shorter, more focused guides. A Trip Authorization Canvas course is also in the early stages of development. This course focuses on travel arranger and traveler responsibilities related to Trip-Authorization.
Luc Sinex’s work on the Diverse Supplier Search tool continues to be recognized by our IU end users, other high education institutions, and the State of Indiana. Luc’s next major project is creating websites for the Accounts Payable and Supplier Data Management (SDM) teams. Neither of these groups currently have their own web presence online. The goal is to launch both sites in fall of this year.
Finally, Sarah Chavez has been engaged by Card Services to help with the re-introduction of the Amazon Business to IU’s P-Card users. This consists of a mass email campaign to encourage users to create Amazon Business accounts, as well as development of a training to help P-Card users compliantly take advantage of all Amazon has to offer.

The Lunch Room
Last quarter’s Lunch & Learn was an in-person field trip to the Lilly Library on Bloomington campus! This astounding resource is IU’s rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library and is home to thousands of wonders like original Star Trek scripts (and Spock’s ears!), Oscars, a tiny Magna Carta, a lock of Edgar Allen Poe’s hair, and George Washington's letter turning down the proposal to make him king but stating that he would consider accepting presidency.
The library staff provide guided tours to dozens of groups each week, some of whom come to visit the collection from other states and even other countries! Understandably, too, as it's a rare privilege to come face to face with priceless original editions of James Audubon's illustrations or the Gutenberg Bible.
It's hard to choose a favorite exhibit, between the puzzle toys, miniature books, important historical documents, and gorgeous art. In the interactive room, your colleagues had the opportunity to touch and handle medieval manuscripts, cuneiform tablets, and more.
The Lunch & Learn attendees also had a brush with fame as we each had the opportunity to hold the suprisingly heavy, 8.25 lb, Academy Award given to John Ford for directing Gone with the Wind in 1940.
Realizing we share a campus with some of the world's rarest creations was certainly humbling. If you're looking for something fun, free, and air conditioned to do with friends and family, check out the Lilly Library!
