The name "Powers & Sons" may not ring a bell, but there's a good chance you've seen their work around IU! In this month's Spotlight on Supplier Diversity, we asked the company to share some background about its formation and relationship with Indiana University.
Who founded your company? What’s the story behind its creation?
Mamon Powers Sr. and Leolene Powers established Powers & Sons Construction Company in 1967. Although there were no sons in the business when it started, the husband and wife duo had a vision for the future. We are proud that today the company is in its third generation of family leadership with offices in Indianapolis, Northwest Indiana, and Chicago.
What led to the start of your relationship with IU?
Over our 56 years in business, Powers & Sons has periodically worked on small IU projects in Indianapolis, and Northwest Indiana.
What are some projects, at IU or in Indiana, our readers may be familiar with?
Powers & Sons Construction is proud to have been part of the following IU projects: McNutt Quad renovations (Bloomington campus), North Residence Hall new construction (Indianapolis campus), Anderson Library & Conference Center renovation (Northwest campus). Currently, Powers & Sons is delivering the new construction of the Indiana University School of Medicine, which is part of the Academic Health Center in Indianapolis.
In addition to our work for IU, Powers & Sons built the Purdue University Honors College & Residences in West Lafayette as well as Ball State University’s new North Residence Hall and North Dining Hall in Muncie.
Powers & Sons’ work in Indianapolis includes the ongoing construction of the new Northview Middle School for MSD of Lawrence Township, the recent multi-year renovation and expansion of Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the new construction of TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park, and the Phase V expansion of the Indiana Convention Center which included a connector to Lucas Oil Stadium.
In Northwest Indiana, Powers & Sons, as part of a joint venture (JV), built the Hard Rock Casino in Northern Indiana, which opened in 2022. We served as the Construction Manager as Constructor (CMc) for Purdue University Northwest’s new Bioscience Innovation Building and served as general contractor for an adaptive re-use project for the Center for Innovation & Design in Engineering Technology, both in Hammond. In addition, Powers & Sons delivered a major improvement and expansion project at Lake Central High School, which included a large structural addition, new natatorium and gymnasiums, and new football field with track and grandstand seating.
What’s your impression of IU?
We appreciate IU’s desire to work together to solve problems and to always be fair.
What does your relationship with IU mean to you?
Indiana University is a very important client for Powers & Sons Construction. We appreciate opportunities to help advance the IU mission and vision through quality general contracting and construction management services.
