Since 2001, Indiana University has had some form of sustainable purchasing policy. The current version is policy FIN-PURCH-14: Sustainable Purchasing.
This policy focuses on two main areas of sustainability:
- Avoiding the purchase of paper products derived from old growth forests.
- Reducing energy consumption and its related costs. Purchases of electronics that have been rated by Energy Star whenever appropriate.
Although there are only two sustainability efforts specifically named in the policy, Procurement Services continuously collaborates with the Office of Sustainability to ensure IU conducts business as sustainably as possible. What can you do to help?
- Familiarize yourself with IU Surplus. Surplus is a great way to save your department money on supplies, furniture, and more.
- Review the Green Travel Guide, developed by the Office of Sustainability, to learn more about making sustainable choices when taking a trip.
- Encourage suppliers to submit invoices via email or their supplier portal, instead of by mail, whenever possible.
These are just a few suggestions! Contact the Office of Sustainability to learn how else your department can help keep IU green.
